Fibromyalgia massage: why gentle myofascial release suits it

Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain, fatigue and sensitivity. Many people with fibromyalgia describe their body as tight, heavy and sore to touch. Myofascial release is one of the gentlest hands on approaches, using slow pressure that the nervous system can accept, and it has been studied in several clinical trials for fibromyalgia.

The Fascia involved

Fascia, the Diaphragm and the nervous system

James often finds the Deep Front Line, including the Diaphragm and psoas, held tight in people with fibromyalgia, alongside shallow breathing. Gentle release of these areas, combined with slow breathing, is a central part of treatment.

Session

Your session for fibromyalgia

The first session is planned to be gentle. After a full conversation, treatment focuses on breathing and the one or two areas you most want help with, so you can see how your body responds. Later sessions widen the work across the whole body.

Research

Research on massage and myofascial release for fibromyalgia

In a randomised trial of 74 people with fibromyalgia, weekly massage and myofascial release sessions improved pain, anxiety, sleep quality and physical function compared with a placebo group.

Between sessions

Gentle care for fibromyalgia between sessions

Gentle and regular beats hard and occasional. A short daily walk, warm baths and a few minutes of slow breathing with a longer out breath help calm a sensitive system. Pacing your day, with rest planned before you need it, makes flares less likely.

Self release should feel kind: a soft ball under the foot or against the upper back, with light pressure, for a minute at a time.
