Jaw tension

How TMJ massage helps jaw tension and clenching

Jaw clenching, grinding and tension around the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) often come with neck tension, headaches and stress. External myofascial release of the masseter, temporalis and the Fascia of the neck can ease the tension around the jaw.

The Fascia involved

The jaw and the Deep Front Line

The jaw sits at the top of the Deep Front Line, which runs down the front of the neck to the Diaphragm. A braced breathing pattern and a forward head posture both keep the jaw muscles working.

Session

Your session for jaw tension

Jaw opening and neck movement are checked first. James releases the chest and front of the neck, the muscles under the jaw, the masseter and temples, and the base of the skull, all from outside the mouth. Jaw opening is checked again at the end.

Between sessions

Easing jaw tension at home

Teeth apart, lips together and tongue resting on the roof of the mouth is the jaw's resting position. Checking it a few times a day breaks the habit of clenching. Gentle circles with the fingertips over the masseter, just in front of the ear, for a minute before bed can help it let go.

Softer foods for a few days and avoiding chewing gum give a sore jaw a rest.

★★★★★
He spent time analysing my posture, looking for the sources of my problems, explaining to me how they are all linked, then gradually working on releasing the fascia in every single part of me.

James taught me so much about my body that I didn't know and explained everything with videos and pictures. The first treatment helped my pain instantly.

Questions

TMJ massage: questions answered

Do you work inside the mouth?

No. All jaw work is external, around the face, temples and neck.

Should I see a dentist?

Yes, see your dentist about grinding, clicking or locking. Myofascial release can sit alongside dental care.

Can it help with clenching at night?

Many people find their jaw feels looser after treatment. A dentist can advise on night guards.
